Zoey’s Stem Cell Journey Part 2…

Zoey came in for surgery to remove adipose tissue (fat) that contains stems cells that we will send to the lab. Dr. Adam sedated her and she underwent general anesthesia in a surgical procedure to remove fat tissue from her abdomen. This procedure only took several minutes and she recovered very fast and was ready to eat. At UVH we use a minimally invasive procedure to harvest this tissue by perform the procedure laparoscopically. The recovery is quite fast!!

The sample that Dr. Adam had taken is going to a specialized lab that will process and concentrate the stem cells. These cells will then be sent back to UVH within 36 hours and Zoey will receive them through injections into the hip joints and intravenous.

Stems cells are undifferentiated biological cells that can differentiate into more specialized cells like cartilage or bone. These cells then divide and produce more cells. The benefits of using stem cells is to reduce pain and inflammation in the area treated. They also regenerate joint tissue and replace the damage tissue. Think of them like tiny baby cells that don’t know what they want to be when they grow up…put them near adult cells and they can transform into that same type!

More to come when we receive her Stem Cells…
