Blood transfusions save lives. At UVH, we offer a pet blood transfusion service that’s supported by the on-site Northwest Louisiana Animal Blood Bank. This is the only community-based dog and cat blood bank in the Arklatex region.

What It Does

Our blood bank service at UVH provides:

  • Remote case consultation
  • Supplies
  • Dog and cat blood products
  • Referrals for diagnostics and primary case management

Appropriate, timely transfusion medicine is a necessity for dogs and cats to help them recover from life-threatening infections, autoimmune disease, cancer, toxicities, and major traumas.

Requirements for Your Pet to Be a Blood Donor

If you would like your pet to be enrolled as a blood donor, they need to meet the following health requirements:

Requirements for Dogs

  • 1-7 years of age
  • Spayed/neutered
  • Must pass a physical and temperament test
  • Must be up to date on all vaccines and parasite preventatives
  • Weigh 50 lbs. minimum

Requirements for Cats

  • 1-7 years of age
  • Spayed/neutered
  • Must pass a physical and temperament test
  • Test viral negative for FeLV/FIV
  • Must be indoor only
  • Must be up to date on all vaccines and parasite preventatives
  • Weigh 10 lbs. minimum

What to Do If Your Pet Meets Our Requirements

Step 1: Have your pet’s blood typed

Step 2: Ask for you pet to be added to the list of potential donors. When a donation spot opens, you will be contacted to review all donor program details, and further in-depth screening will be performed to clear your pet for approval as a blood donor.
